Burgen des Mittelalter
Die Fotografien entstanden während der Arbeit an zwei Projekten. Einmal fotografierte ich die Burgen entlang des Oberen Mittelrheintal und beim zweiten Auftrag wichtige Burgen in Deutschland und Österreich für die Mittelalter Ausgabe des Magazin GEO Epoche.
Für einen Fotografen ist es kein leichtes Unterfangen, beim Thema Burgen einen neuen und eigenen Maßstab in der schon bestehenden Bilderwelt zu setzen.
Aus historischer Sicht sind die Burgen ein wichtiger Teil der kulturellen Identität Deutschlands, und sie dominieren ganze Landstriche (z.B. entlang des Rheins).
Ausländische Besucher nach Deutschland werden von diesen Orten und der Geschichte der Burgen angezogen. Diese Faszination wollte ich mit meinen Fotografien zeigen.
Aufträge dieser Art bestehen immer aus dem fotografischen Konzept, wie man die Burgen fotografieren will, welchen Beitrag diese Bilder leisten können und ihrer technischen Umsetzung.
Um Burgen in dieser Größe beleuchten zu können, bedarf es einem nicht unerheblichen zeitlichen und technischen Aufwand. Die Beleuchtungszeit variiert zwischen 40 Minuten und 2 Stunden.
Bei fast allen Burgen ließ ich – so vorhanden – das bestehende Licht der Burg ausschalten und beleuchte die komplette Burg nur mit meinen Scheinwerfern.
Mitunter bedeutete dies, dass ich während der Belichtungszeit vom Kamerastandpunkt mit dem Auto zur Burg fuhr, diese beleuchtete und der Assistent die Kamera kontrollierte.
Das echte Licht in der Fotografie lässt sich nicht am Rechner erzeugen und diese nicht computergestützten Arbeiten schätze ich an solchen Aufnahmen sehr.
Medieval castles.
I worked on the Castles photographs during two assignments.
For the first assignment, I photographed the castles along the upper middle Rhine valley in Germany.
The second assignment for the german magazine GEO EPOCHE and their publication about the Middle Ages took me all over Germany and to one castle in Austria.
I enjoyed these two stories very much. When it comes to castles, it seems very difficult for a photographer to show something new.
From a historical background, the castles are an important part of the cultural identity of Germany and they dominate whole areas (e.g. along the river Rhine).
Foreign visitors to Germany are attracted by these places and the history of the castles. I wanted to show this fascination with my photographs.
These assignments have two sides. One is my photography concept and the other side is the technical aspect. I love both sides.
To illuminate a large building like a castle you need a bit of time: the illumination time for these castles photographs varies between 40 minutes and 2 hours. For two shots I had to drive with my car during the exposure from the camera point to the castle, while my assistant waited at the camera. Then I illuminated the castle from various positions and drove back to the camera point. This technical challenge is always a joy for me. In our computerized work this really handmade technique is not unimportant…
