Schlafzimmer – Das Zimmer der Geheimnisse.
Ich begann die Serie über die Schlafzimmer zuerst mit Aufnahmen von Räumen aus den 1930er und 1940er Jahre. Viele der Schlafzimmer befanden sich im Originalzustand, so wie es das junge Ehepaar nach der Heirat eingerichtet hatte. Dieselbe Tapete, dasselbe Bild und auch dieselbe Bettwäsche.
Normalerweise kauften die Eltern des jungen Ehepaar das Bett, welches meist von einem einheimischem Schreiner gebaut wurde. Das Bild hinter dem Bett an der Wand läßt auch auf die Religonszugehörigkeit des Paares schließen: Katholiken wählten ein Bild mit einer Darstellung von Maria, während Protestanten Bilder mit Motiven von Jesus und Engeln bevorzugten. Die Bilder wurden von fahrenden Handelsvertretern verkauft, die bis zu 10 Bilder mit religösen Motiven im Angebot hatten.
Meist schlief die Frau auf der rechten Seite des Bett (vom Betrachter also links), der Mann links. Kleine Kreuze an der Wand bekamen das Ehepaar zur Hochzeit und werden nach dem Tod mit ins Grab gegeben.
Auf vielen Bildern zeigt der Wecker die Todeszeit des Ehepartners an. Manchmal wurde das Bettzeug des Verstorbenen entfernt, manchmal ließ man das Bett so wie es war.
Kaum einer der 80 bis 90 Jährigen Besitzer denkt daran, das Bett durch moderne Betten zu ersetzen, einzig aus gesundheitlichen Gründen wurde der Tausch erwogen.
Ich erweiterte die Serie dann auch um moderne Schlafzimmer und fotografierte diese auch nicht mehr nur aus der Zentralperspektive.

Bedrooms- The room of secrets.
I started to take photographs of bedrooms which are originally from the 1930’s and 1940’s. Many of these bedrooms were still in the original condition as they were furnished at that time, when the young couple married and moved together in their new home.
The same bed-linen, the same wallpaper.
Usually the parents bought the bed, which was made by a local carpenter. The pictures on the wall shows to which religion the couple belonged. The roman catholic preferred the pictures with a Madonna, the protestant with Jesus and/or angels. The pictures were sold by merchants from house to house. They had up to ten different religious scenes for sale.
The woman slept on the right side of the bed, the man on the left. The small crosses on the wall are given to the couple for marriage and will given to them when they die.
Some alarm clocks shows the time of death of the partner, sometimes they remove the bed-linen or left the bed as it was.
All of the owners are in their 80s and 90s and many of them never thought to change their bedrooms or replace the beds with modern ones, only if they were too sick and need special beds.
I extended the work with modern bedrooms and started to photograph these rooms from different angles and not only from a central perspective.
